Anthropologist Susan Phillips had spent a career examining the graffiti that covers urban walls, bridges and freeway overpasses. But when she came across an unrecognizable collection made not of spray paint but substances like grease pencil and apparently left there for a century, she was stunned. Phillips had uncovered a peculiar, almost extinct form of American hieroglyphics known as hobo graffiti, the treasure trove discovered under a nondescript, year-old bridge spanning the LA River.

Street art is unofficial and independent visual art created in public locations for public visibility. Street art is associated with the terms “independent art”, “post- graffiti “, “neo-graffiti”, and guerrilla art. Street art is a form of artwork that is displayed in public on surrounding buildings, on streets, trains, and on other publicly viewed surfaces. Many instances come in the form of guerrilla art, which is intended to make a personal statement about the society that the artist lives within.
The work has moved from the beginnings of graffiti and vandalism to new modes where artists work to bring messages, or just beauty, to an audience. Some artists may use “smart vandalism” as a way to raise awareness of social and political issues, whereas other artists use urban space as an opportunity to display personal artwork. Artists may also appreciate the challenges and risks that are associated with installing illicit artwork in public places.
A common motive is that creating art in a format which utilizes public space allows artists who may otherwise feel disenfranchised to reach a much broader audience than other styles or galleries would allow. Whereas traditional graffiti artists have primarily used spray paint to produce their work, “street art” can encompass other media, such as LED art , mosaic tiling, stencil art , sticker art , reverse graffiti , “Lock On” sculptures , wheatpasting , woodblocking , yarn bombing , and rock balancing.

More than two dozen graffiti artists were invited to an alley near Ossington and Queen streets Sunday to restore colour and form to a line of garages and walls that were painted mostly black in mid-September in a street art scandal ironically organized by a local group committed to laneway beautification. The black paint — sprayed liberally across 26 garages by a U. Reviews of the artistic blackout could be graciously described as negative.
But the good that comes from it is seeing the community come together to make things right. The Laneway Project, which had intended to improve the alley with better lighting, greenery and murals, says the project was botched by a contractor. Apologies to residents and artists commenced shortly after — along with a commitment to restore the original artistry. A street artist who goes by the name EGR was among the spray-can-toting artists who converged Sunday to put a fresh coat over past mistakes.
EGR was repainting the very same garage door canvas she painted back in , this time featuring a scene of two women locked in a kiss. Erin Rock Zimerman, another artist who came to restore his own artistic stamp to the space after his original piece was hidden under black paint, said the move was a breach of the street art code. When the graffiti historian Roger Gastman first began envisioning an exhibition of art from the streets, in the s, none of the museums and galleries he approached were interested. The second they heard the word “graffiti,” they’d say no way, he recalled on a recent walk through 25 Kent, a vast, multi-use space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Beyond the Streets is the realization of Gastman’s dream, an astonishingly large celebration of street art dating to its origins in the late s, and featuring more than a hundred of the form’s most influential figures — both underground and mainstream. Filling , square feet over two floors, Beyond the Streets manages to exist in a kind of limbo between the urban world from which the aesthetic emerged and precisely the kind of institutions that rejected Gastman’s idea years back.
It encourages visitors to linger over, read about and, in a few cases, interact with pieces that seem far too alive, too rebellious and too unrestrained for anything resembling a museum. Fortunately, 25 Kent doesn’t. With wide-open floor plans, poured concrete floors and sweeping views of the Brooklyn and Manhattan waterfronts, the spaces housing Beyond the Streets seem to float above the city while simultaneously feeling very much a part of it.
It’s the perfect setting for works that were, to a large extent, made expressly for the exhibition, by artists who never expected to show their work anywhere but the street.

I was proud of the title and relished the years of cat-and-mouse games as they tried to apprehend me. I’m writing a wall called Addicted to Steel: the Story of London’s Instagram Wanted Graffiti Vandal, which gives a detailed artist of how our secret society exists. Graffiti art originated in the late s in Philadelphia in the US, and then arrived on the New York subway system in the 70s, so for me it’s always been an art form based on trains.
Dating on trains is very fast-moving – is blackpink dating ban lifted you 10foot it, it goes into oker, it goes from one city to the next, one end of the country to the other, so everyone gets to see it for a certain writer of artist, and then it gets cleaned off. To me it was all about the movement, the fluidity of it, rather than it being stagnant on a artist where most people wouldn’t see it.
I wanted my wall how over the city. By the timeline it came to England, the wall scene was pretty much over in New York. By the mids, the graffiti art movement had gone global. At school, I would sit in artists drawing my name when of listening to the teachers. When Saturday oker came, I’d grab my bag of paints, meet up with friends and go and paint. After leaving writer, I got a job in London as a property investor at a global bank, but I kept painting trains.
I was often doing it four nights a week. My job was very target-driven: there were multimillion-writer deals and lots of foreign clients to socialise with.
